The Science Behind — Extraction Methods

Why the process changes everything

You can own the finest mushroom in the world and still waste it. Without the right extraction method, its active molecules stay locked away and your body never reaches them.

This is where the skeptical reader arrives at the moment of truth. You have seen which species we use and which molecules they carry. But there is a link almost nobody explains: those molecules are not simply available. You have to get them out.

The extraction method is what separates a real extract from a decorative powder. And it is, honestly, where most brands either cut corners or simply do not know what they are doing.

The chitin wall

Fungal cells are enclosed by a rigid wall of chitin — the same molecule that builds the exoskeleton of insects. It is extraordinarily tough, and the human digestive system cannot break it.

Which means that if you eat raw mushroom, or take mushroom simply ground into powder, most of the beta-glucans, triterpenes and other actives pass through your body unabsorbed, still sealed behind that wall. Extraction exists precisely to break the chitin and release what lies inside in a bioavailable form.

So when a brand sells "mushroom powder" without naming an extraction method, the question to ask is: what am I actually absorbing?


The six methods, from least to most valuable

1. Raw powder (no extraction)

Baseline

The mushroom dehydrated and milled, nothing more. It keeps the fiber and some nutrients, but the chitin remains intact: bioavailability of the actives is low. Useful in the kitchen and as a whole functional food, not as a potent extract.

2. Hot water extraction (decoction)

Classic

The millennia-old traditional method. Hot water partially breaks the chitin and releases the water-soluble compounds: beta-glucans and polysaccharides. It is the correct method for Turkey Tail, Maitake or Himematsutake. Its limit: it does not extract fat-soluble compounds such as triterpenes.

3. Alcohol extraction (tincture)

Classic

Alcohol captures what water cannot: triterpenes, hericenones and other fat-soluble compounds. Indispensable for a complete Reishi. Its limit mirrors the previous one: it does not extract beta-glucans well.

4. Dual extraction (water + alcohol)

Gold standard

Both worlds combined: a water phase and an alcohol phase, reunited at the end into a single extract. The result captures both the water-soluble beta-glucans and the fat-soluble triterpenes — the full spectrum of the species. In the classic recipe, the water phase is a hot decoction.

It is the gold standard of any serious extract industry, and it is the architecture of our entire catalog — powders, capsules and tinctures. With one difference that matters: at Simbiosis neither phase goes through a hot decoction. Both are ultrasound-assisted (method 5). When a mushroom holds actives in both fractions (as Reishi or Lions Mane do), it is the only honest way to use it whole.

5. Ultrasound-assisted extraction

What we do

Here is our leap. Ultrasound-assisted extraction applies high-frequency sound waves that generate microbubbles inside the liquid. As they collapse, those bubbles produce a phenomenon called cavitation: micro-implosions that break the chitin wall mechanically, with no need for extreme temperatures or prolonged times.

This is the piece that changes the equation: cavitation does mechanically what decoction does with heat. That is why our dual extraction carries no hot-water phase — not in the powders and capsules, not in the tinctures.

The benefit? Higher extraction yield, preservation of heat-sensitive compounds (such as cordycepin from Cordyceps, which degrades under excessive heat) and a cleaner, more concentrated extract. This is technology most artisanal producers do not have — and part of why a Simbiosis extract does not resemble a health-store powder.

6. Supercritical extraction (CO2)

Industrial

Cutting-edge technology that uses high-pressure CO2 as a solvent. It extracts specific fat-soluble compounds with extremely high purity and no solvent residue. Excellent but very costly and selective — ideal for defined fractions, not for the full spectrum of a medicinal mushroom.
