Every spring, as the snow begins to withdraw from the alpine pastures of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, entire families leave their villages and camp for weeks in the mountains, searching the ground inch by inch. They are after a tiny fungus that is worth, gram for gram, more than gold.
A fungus that eats a caterpillar
Ophiocordyceps sinensis — known in Tibetan as yartsa gunbu, “summer grass, winter worm” — parasitizes the ghost-moth larvae of the genus Thitarodes that live underground in alpine meadows. The fungus devours its host from within, mummifying it, and in spring a slender, dark stroma rises from the head of the dead caterpillar to the surface. That hybrid — half mummified insect, half fungal fruit — is what is harvested.
From traditional medicine to gold rush
Used in traditional Tibetan and Chinese medicine for centuries as a tonic and aphrodisiac, yartsa gunbu underwent a radical economic transformation over the past two decades. An analysis published in Economic Botany documented a 350% rise in the price paid to collectors between 1997 and 2004, turning this fungus into the most important source of income for rural Tibetan households: on average, it provides between 70% and 90% of families' annual cash income in harvesting areas, and contributed at least 225 million dollars to the GDP of the Tibet Autonomous Region in a single year.
An entire economy sustained by a parasite
Later research in the Indian Himalayas confirms the pattern: whole communities now depend on this seasonal rush for fungal gold, with prices that can reach 20,000 dollars per kilogram on the international market. The mounting harvesting pressure, however, raises serious questions about sustainability: the lack of long-term studies on the wild populations of Ophiocordyceps sinensis makes it impossible to know with any certainty how much longer this economy can hold before it exhausts the very resource that sustains it.
