For more than two thousand years, Ganoderma lucidum — Reishi in Japanese — was so prized that only emperors were permitted to consume it. Modern science is beginning to explain why.
Main Active Compounds
- Beta-glucans: they modulate the immune system by calibrating it rather than overstimulating it, activating macrophages, NK cells, and T lymphocytes.
- Triterpenes (ganoderic acids): anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-allergic, with antiproliferative activity documented in vitro.
- Sterols: hormonal precursors with a general adaptogenic action.
Scientifically Documented Effects
Immune Modulation
A Cochrane systematic review (Jin et al., 2016), pooling five randomized trials, found that — as an adjuvant to chemotherapy or radiotherapy — Ganoderma lucidum was associated with better tumor response and with significant increases in T-lymphocyte subpopulations (CD3, CD4, and CD8); NK cell activity rose only marginally. The authors concluded that there is not enough evidence to use it as a first-line treatment, but that it may be considered a complement to conventional therapy. DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD007731.pub3
Sleep Quality and Stress
Reishi extracts show GABAergic-like activity. In animal models, an aqueous extract potentiated pentobarbital-induced sleep — shortening latency and increasing non-REM sleep and delta activity (slow waves) — an effect reversed by flumazenil, which points to a benzodiazepine-like mechanism. (Chu et al., 2007, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior)
Hepatoprotection
In studies, ganoderic acids have been shown to protect liver cells from oxidative damage, with documented reductions in transaminases in cases of mild liver involvement.
Adaptogenic Effect
It meets the three classic criteria of an adaptogen, and is described as modulating the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis — supporting the management of chronic stress without creating dependence.
