Poria (Fu Ling): the subterranean mushroom revered in Chinese medicine

Not every medicinal fungus shows itself. Poria (Poria cocos, also classified as Wolfiporia extensa) grows underground, bound to the roots of pines, forming a compact sclerotium that can reach the size of a coconut. Fu Ling is traditionally used in decoctions and herbal formulas, and today also as powders and extracts. Its flavor is neutral, which has allowed it to be folded even into food preparations across East Asia.
