In 1993, a group of Chinese runners broke several world records, and their coach credited part of the feat to a tonic containing Cordyceps sinensis. The anecdote is famous — and also disputed: those records later fell under suspicion of doping. It is worth separating it from what the clinical evidence does support, which is more modest and more interesting in its biochemistry.
Why Cordyceps is unlike any stimulant
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors — the signal of fatigue — without supplying real energy. Cordyceps is credited with a different mechanism: its active compounds, among them cordycepin, have been associated with greater availability of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the molecule that fuels every cell — and with improved oxygen use during exertion. These are mechanisms proposed in research, not all confirmed in humans; the strongest clinical evidence centers on markers of aerobic endurance.
C. sinensis vs C. militaris
Wild Tibetan C. sinensis can exceed 20,000 USD per kilo at its highest grades. Quality supplements use cultivated Cordyceps militaris, which carries a higher concentration of cordycepin and allows the active dose to be standardized. It is the one we use at Simbiosis.
Scientific Evidence
Aerobic Threshold and Endurance
Chen et al. (2010, J Altern Complement Med): 12 weeks of Cs-4 (Cordyceps sinensis) in healthy older adults (50–75 years) raised the metabolic threshold (+10.5%) and the ventilatory threshold (+8.5%) versus placebo; VO2 max changed in neither group. DOI: 10.1089/acm.2009.0226
Resistance to Fatigue
Hirsch et al. (2017, Journal of Dietary Supplements): in 28 young adults, a mushroom blend with Cordyceps militaris (4 g per day) significantly raised VO2 max (+4.8 ml/kg/min) and increased time to exhaustion (+69.8 s) after 3 weeks; there was no significant effect after a single week. Post-exercise Recovery
Its potential role in recovery — reduced markers of muscle damage and improved lactate clearance after exertion — has also been explored, a line that still calls for more evidence in humans.
Demystifying The Last of Us
The Cordyceps that parasitizes ants does exist in nature, but its mechanisms depend on the specific biology of insects. Mammals have body temperature, an immune system, and biological barriers that make such parasitism impossible. The Cordyceps we consume is a species cultivated under controlled conditions, with centuries of safe use in humans.
How to take it
- For performance: 1–3 g, 30–60 minutes before training.
- Daily use: 1 g in the morning, in coffee or a hot beverage.
- Capsules: 1–2 (500 mg) once or twice a day.
- Minimum protocol: 4–6 weeks.
