Fungal Rock Art: What Tassili and Selva Pascuala Really Prove

In 1988, Italian ethnobotanist Giorgio Samorini was photographing eroded sandstone formations in the Algerian Sahara when he stumbled upon something that would change his life: cave paintings from thousands of years ago with human figures surrounded by mushroom-shaped objects. Thousands of miles and centuries away, in Spain, another panel held a similar secret—but one much harder to dismiss.

Tassili n'Ajjer: The Disputed Interpretation

In the Tassili n'Ajjer massif, Algeria, a mural known as the mushroom man depicts a masked figure from whose body fungoid shapes sprout, with dotted lines that some researchers interpret as representations of psychoactive effects. Samorini dated these images to a range of between 9,000 and 7,000 years before the present. However, the field itself recognizes the limits of this reading: there is no physical evidence—neither chemical residues nor DNA—to confirm the actual presence of mushrooms at the site, and other specialists have proposed alternative readings, including that the figures represent sheep.

Selva Pascuala: The Best Documented Case

The panel at Selva Pascuala, near Villar del Humo in Cuenca, Spain, offers a different standard of evidence. An analysis published in Economic Botany in 2011 examined thirteen fungoid figures painted alongside a bovid, with a morphological realism that the authors specifically link to Psilocybe hispanica, a species that naturally grows in the region on cattle dung—precisely the ecological context depicted in the scene. The study describes it as the first direct evidence of a possible ritual use of Psilocybe in prehistoric Europe.

Two Images, Two Levels of Certainty

The difference between both cases illustrates something important about the archaeology of the symbolic: not every mushroom-shaped figure is automatically evidence of a fungal cult. Tassili remains the subject of open debate; Selva Pascuala, with its combination of precise morphology and coherent ecological context, represents the case with the strongest scientific backing to date.
