Armillaria ostoyae: the largest organism on the planet lives under your feet

It's not a blue whale or a millennia-old redwood. The largest individual organism ever documented on Earth is a fungus, and most of its body remains invisible beneath the soil of the Malheur National Forest in Oregon.

A finding that grew larger and larger

In 1992, a team led by biologist James Anderson at the University of Toronto documented in the journal Nature that a colony of Armillaria bulbosa in Michigan was actually a single genetically identical organism, spread over about 15 hectares. The discovery sparked a search for even larger specimens. That same year, a specimen of Armillaria ostoyae was identified in Washington covering about 600 hectares. Research in the Malheur forest, led by forest pathologist Catherine Parks of the U.S. Forest Service, confirmed in 2003 through genetic analysis that the specimen there was a single continuous organism extending over approximately 965 hectares — about ten square kilometers.

How it's proven to be a single organism

The evidence is not visual, it's genetic: microsatellite analysis of hundreds of Armillaria ostoyae isolates allows individual genotypes to be distinguished and the real boundaries of each clonal colony to be traced, differentiating it from genetically distinct neighboring organisms that might be confused at first glance. This type of genotyping confirmed that the Malheur specimen, although appearing as a mosaic of dead trees scattered on the surface, shares a single genotype underground.

The architecture that allows for such growth

Genome sequencing of Armillaria revealed a remarkable genomic expansion compared to other related fungi, with lineage-specific genes that are activated during the development of rhizomorphs — root-like structures that allow the fungus to actively move through the soil in search of new trees to colonize. This capacity for clonal dispersal by rhizomorphs, rather than sexual reproduction, largely explains how a single individual can occupy square kilometers of forest.

A pathogen, not a healer

It is worth clarifying that this giant is not benign: Armillaria ostoyae is the cause of Armillaria root rot disease, one of the most destructive forest pathogens in North America, and has been slowly and continuously killing conifers in Malheur for millennia. Its size is a biological record, not a cause for ecological celebration.
