In the mountainous forests of Taiwan grows a fungus found nowhere else on the planet: Antrodia cinnamomea, called niu-chang-chih by the people who first discovered it. It is a rare and very slow-growing polypore that thrives only within the hollow trunk of an equally endemic tree, the camphor tree Cinnamomum kanehirae. This double exclusivity—a fungus that requires a single host on a single island—has made it one of the most revered species in traditional Taiwanese medicine and, over the past two decades, one of the most researched in fungal pharmacognosy.

- Ergostane-type triterpenoids (antcins, antquinones, and antcinic acids), largely exclusive to this species, to which much of its biological activity is attributed.

Hepatic Affinity
Preclinical literature has consistently explored the relationship between Antrodia cinnamomea triterpenoids and the liver. Recent studies describe how certain compounds activate the ALDH2 enzyme and modulate hepatic redox balance, which is being studied in models of alcohol-induced damage and fat accumulation. Research points to a role in contributing to liver function, although human studies are still limited.
Antioxidant Defense
Extracts of this fungus show a remarkable ability to neutralize free radicals and support the cell's own antioxidant systems. This antioxidant component helps maintain balance against daily oxidative stress.
Immune Modulation
Its polysaccharides and triterpenoids have been studied for their ability to interact with immune system cells, a pattern shared with other medicinal mushrooms, supporting the body's basal immune response.
How to Take It
Due to its extreme rarity in nature, almost all available material comes from controlled cultivation—fermented mycelium or fruiting bodies cultivated on wood. It is commonly consumed as a standardized extract or powder. As it is a species with a high concentration of triterpenoids, it is advisable to always follow the specific product's instructions.
